“You should’ve seen Anne up there, today! ‘Grandpa’s little girl’, they said”, jabbered the old lady, as she took her seat in her backyard. “Remember you waved at me from the stage during your graduation?”. She giggled in reminiscence.

“You don’t like the snow”, she said looking at the sky, worried.

Back home, Anne noticed her grandma brushing away the falling snow from her grandpa’s tombstone. She ran to fetch her. “Grandma! You’ll catch a cold. Let’s go!”

Ushered into the home, grandma threw a final glance towards her withered love and thought, “I won’t be too long, my dear.”

Yuhu’s Corner:
This story is a part of the Friday Fictioneers Photo Prompt Flash fiction challenge. Every Friday, a photo prompt is provided by the organizer Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. The participants have to come up with a 100 word story. You can check out the other entries here.

Last week, I read all the 76 amazing entries! Here are a couple of stories that I really loved.
Everything Happens for a Reason by Plaridel, who introduced me to the FF group. Thanks, Plaridel.
The Spendthrift by Michael Wynn. I, particularly, loved the conversation in his story.

  1. That was beautifully done, Yuhu. I felt no sadness. A joy of living but an acknowledgement that it cannot last forever and the belief she will find her love in the afterlife.

    1. Absolutely. That’s exactly what I was aiming to convey. The title says withered love, yet she holds him dear to her heart even after he has long gone. Love can never wither away, I feel. Thanks a lot for reading, Dale.

  2. The conversations at the cemetery are always filled with emotions, some with the love that is lost, some with the fear that we will some day end up here too… And that’s why I love it!

  3. Wow this gave me chills! So heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time!
This is perfection! Grandma’s wrinkled shaky hands wiping of the snow flashed before my eyes like a movie!

  4. Your story reminds me of an aged couple whowere childless.I had never seen them grumbling about that. They loved each other so much. That lady wanted to see her husband go off first because she knew that could not do anything without her.To my awe the man died first and she followed him on the tenth day.
